LOS ANGELES – To commemorate Earth Day this Saturday, April 22, and riders taking the train to help the environment, Metrolink is featuring rider-taken photographs at a Los Angeles Union Station exhibit that opened on April 10. Metrolink's “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Rides” photo exhibit highlights selected rider entries and works by local photographer Erwin Recinos.
On Earth Day, Metrolink will provide free rides all day, on all trains. Riders can use promo code “EarthDay2023” to redeem their free ride at ticket machines. A complimentary Earth Day ticket will automatically be sent to registered Metrolink mobile app users on Friday, April 21. Anyone who downloads the Metrolink App and registers an account by Thursday, April 20, will receive the free ticket on Friday, April 21.
“We hope that through this fun photo contest and the temporary photo exhibit, we can engage the public to consider using Metrolink trains with greater frequency,” Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle said. “Whether it’s for work or leisure travel, if everyone commits to small changes in their modes of transportation, we can make a positive and lasting impact on our air quality and environment.”
Through rider photography, Metrolink is showcasing how people can take the train for more than a commute, but also their ticket to explore countless destinations within the six Southern California counties to find the beauty of the region. Recinos’ work, which beautifully documents SoCal’s natural attractions, urban landscapes, culture, and diverse communities, served as inspiration for our riders to participate in this photo series. Through their lenses, we see various perspectives on the environment and community, and the importance of sustainability.
To honor Earth Day, the contest and the exhibit provide an opportunity to reinforce the positive effects riding Metrolink and Arrow trains can have on the environment and people’s quality of life. Riding the train instead of driving can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and limit harmful pollutants.
Three photo contest winners will be selected and announced the week of April 24. Each winner will receive Metrolink Monthly Passes for one year and have their photos featured in the LA Union Station photo exhibit and on Metrolink social media platforms.
The photo exhibit will be available for viewing between now and May 1, and the “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Rides” contest is currently accepting photo submissions through April 24. Visit Metrolink’s Earth Day webpage to learn more about the free rides on Earth Day and how to enter the contest.
